How do I inflate my "EZ-2-Nurse Twins" Pillow?
We sell an easy-to-use hand pump called the "Double Quick Pump". It allows you to inflate your pillow within 3 minutes. However, it is also simple to inflate by mouth within 5-7 minutes (this is a great job for Dad!). Begin by inflating your pillow to only 60%. Depending on the weight of the babies, the length of your upper body, and the firmness you desire, start at 60% and add air as needed. Do not inflate with high air pressure devices or excessively inflate.
How do I clean my "EZ-2-Nurse Twins" Pillow?
Your "EZ-2-Nurse Twins" Pillow is surface-cleanable with warm water and a mild detergent. We recommend using "Totally Toddler" or similar mild spray cleaner designed for nursery use. Just spray on, and using a warm water cloth, wipe off. Do not use bleach or harsh detergents, or attempt to machine wash.
What is the "EZ-2-Nurse Twins" Pillow made of?
Your "EZ-2-Nurse Twins" Pillow is constructed of a heavy-duty inflatable vinyl, with a flocked ("velvet") non-slip surface, and sealed with welded seams for durability. The inflatable design allows you to inflate the pillow to your perfect comfort level. As the babies change in weight and length, and as your breasts change in size during the first year, you can adjust the air pressure to accommodate your changing needs.
What makes the "EZ-2-Nurse Twins" Pillow so much better than other pillows?
When we first designed this pillow, we wanted to emulate the position of when a mother brings a baby to breast in the bend of her arm. Notice how baby is clearly coming to her at an angle. A baby should never be placed on a flat surface to nurse, because he will have to turn his head sideways to meet the breast. Not only is that position uncomfortable, but it also impedes the natural swallow reflex and digestion. My pediatrician always advised me, "Position your babies tummy-to-tummy. Their tummy to your tummy." The angled top surface allows you to position your babies facing towards you. It’s simply more natural, more comfortable, and more productive.
How does the pillow stay around me?
The pillow secures behind mother with an adjustable strap and a side-squeeze buckle (it’s much like putting on a fanny-pack). Just cinch the strap securely. The pillow stays in place and won’t scoot away from you. The strap is designed to fit up to a 58" waist.
Will I really be able to nurse my twins "hands free"?
Absolutely. You’ll notice that other nursing pillows show mother cradle-holding her baby on top of a pillow, using the pillow for her arm support. That may work well when nursing just one baby, but as a mother of multiples, you’ll need to have both arms free. Foremost, for bringing babies to the pillow surface one at a time, and then when the nursing session is finished, removing them from the pillow one at a time. Also, both hands and all ten fingers are now free to assist with latch-on and latch-off (place your forefinger between his gums to release his latch); chin-drop (if baby’s bite is too small on your nipple, use your thumb and forefinger to drop his chin, which opens his mouth wider for a bigger
latch); cheek-strokes (stimulate a sleepy baby by rubbing his cheek with the side of your forefinger); caressing (their silky little heads); burping one baby while the other one continues to nurse; or, tending to a third or fourth child (you really ARE an amazing woman!). This pillow is designed for you to be able to nurse your twins throughout the day and night without assistance.
How do I use my "EZ-2-Nurse Twins" Pillow?
Before you sit down, place the babies next to where you’ll be sitting, with one baby on the right and one on the left, of where you’ll be sitting. With the angled side up, strap the U-shaped nursing pillow around you. HELPFUL HINT: It’s easier to put the pillow on "backwards" with the buckle in front of you. Note the "click" as you connect the side-squeeze buckle, cinch the belt so the pillow is snug around you, then "spin" the pillow around, so the nursing surface is now in front of you and the buckle is behind you. Now, sit down between the babies, and place the back pillow (rounded end facing up) behind you, so you can comfortably lean forward into the pillow. Bring one baby to
the top of one side of the pillow, roll baby towards you and assist with latch-on. Slowly reach for the second baby, and repeat. Finally, take a big breath, exhale, relax your neck and shoulders, and enjoy!
Will I be using the "football hold" position?
Although you’ll be using the "football hold" position (one baby along each side of you), your arms and hands will not be underneath the babies, cradle-holding them. They should be above the babies, free to assist with positioning, stimulating and caressing. Remember it’s easier and healthier for babies to nurse while on their sides, rather than flat on their backs with their heads turned to the side, so position your babies "tummy-to-tummy" – their tummy to your tummy.
Do you have any suggestions for increasing my milk supply for twins?
Yes! Here’s our TOP TEN:
1. Start pumping as soon as possible after delivery. This will let your body know, it’s time to start supplying milk!
2. Force yourself to drink AT LEAST ten large glasses of water per day (that’s one every waking hour). And, drinking a large glass of water five minutes prior to nursing helps with milk let-down.
3. Nurse or express milk frequently, 8-12 times in 24 hours. Drink more water!
4. Apply moist heat to breasts 3-5 minutes before nursing. Massage breasts before and during feeding. Gently stimulate the nipple and areola. Engorged, with a fever? Notify your doctor immediately. There is safe prescription medicine available to help you while you continue to nurse. Don’t suffer! Try taking a very hot shower, and bend over at the waist. Hang there for as long as possible, to stimulate blood flow, milk flow and to relieve the pressures of gravity. It really works!
5. Need some one-on-one help? Call the hospital where you delivered and ask to speak to a Lactation Consultant. (Usually a free service over the telephone.) Call La Leche League. They can refer you to a support group in your area.
6. Try using some relaxation techniques while nursing or pumping: deep breathing, visual imagery of pleasant place or of milk flowing to baby, or music or relaxation tapes.
7. Express milk between feedings as often as possible during the day (start first thing in the morning when your breasts are most full). Pumping in between feedings will make your body think it needs to produce enough milk for 3 or 4 babies, instead of "just" two.
8. Eat a nutritious diet. Don’t try to lose weight now. It WILL happen. Good nutrition for you AND the babies is still critical. Your weight loss should be no more than 2-4 pounds per month. Drink even more water!
9. It takes up to 7 days to see an increase in your milk supply once you begin more frequent feedings or pumpings. Don’t give up, be patient with yourself and your twins!
10. When you get overwhelmed with nursing, remember this: if you were to bottle-feed your twins instead of nurse them, you would need to prepare about 700 bottles of formula in the first month alone! Do the math….10-12 bottles per day X two babies X 30 days in the month = 600-720 bottles per month! That’s not only expensive and time-consuming, but it’s synthetic, harder-to-digest and doesn’t offer anywhere near the health benefits to your newborns, or to you. Breastfeeding promotes uterine contractions (for healing after delivery), assists in weight loss after delivery, and discourages several types of
cancer. Just hang in there. Every month that passes, it will get easier. Your infants will become stronger and more productive nursers. Feeding times will spread out, and they will begin sleeping during the night for longer stretches. Hurray!
