Thanks for Helping Nursing Moms affected by Hurricane Katrina

Update 1/3/06--A note of thanks and New Orleans LLL still accepting donations...

LA LECHE LEAGUE OF JEFFERSON

Breastfeeding Information and Support

Dear Friends at Mommy Gear,

Thank you so much for the clothing that you collected for our moms.  I am one of the LLL Leaders with LLL of Jefferson and I live in St. Charles Parish.  I have been involved in passing on donations to mothers all over the Greater New Orleans area since I returned in late October.  Last week, I was able to go to Lara's house and pick up the last 10 boxes of donations that she had.  With her newborn baby keeping her busy, I had more time to pass out the clothing.  I sorted everything by size, then I sent out an e-mail to our member loop which numbers almost 100.  The response has been terrific, and most of the clothing has been claimed.  In St. Charles Parish alone, we have 22,000 new residents that were flooded out of their homes.  Some of the donations have gone to Terrebonne Parish, to St. Tammany, and to Jefferson Parish.  LLL has been able to provide baby clothes, diapers, blankets, and even a few strollers.  It is wonderful to now be able to help out with nursing clothes and maternity clothes.  If anyone wants to continue to donate, they can ship it to my home.  We will continue to provide help as long as we are receiving donations.

Please know that these mothers are so grateful.  Many have not received any insurance money, and most can not return to their homes because the city has not decided if they can rebuild.  Most are living with extended family, several families in one home or in small travel trailers in someone's driveway.  Most left home with three summer outfits.  Stores here are reopening with very limited hours due to lack of employees.  Most of the winter clothes never arrived, so the families are faced with cold weather while the stores have bathing suits on display.  There is only one thrift store open in Jefferson Parish at this time.  All the rest had extensive damage. It is a very hard time for these families.  Most are so overwhelmed by the generosity of total strangers and several have asked if they could write thank you notes to the donors.  On behalf of all these moms, I say thank you.  We appreciate everything you have done for us.

I am due with my seventh child in May.  I love the clothes on your web site and will plan on buying some nursing clothes this spring.

Update 12/30/05--Several boxes of donations that we sent to the LaLeche League leaders in Texas were passed onto the African American Breastfeeding Alliance of Texas who had a baby shower for displaced moms.  We just received a note telling us about their event:

"We wanted to make a difference in the lives of women who not only had to think about their future, but the future of the life growing inside them.  All this during a season labeled as one of the most exciting life changing times--Pregnancy.  We wanted to bring lasting memories of hope, joy, a sense of family and...have fun.  Our wish was to give new hope for the future within these survivors so we decided to give a baby shower in honor of the smallest survivors.
Each participant received a diaper bag filled with lots of goodies...Then the moms had an opportunity to go shopping in our creatively arranged 'store.'   We spent hours assisting families finding just their size and type of clothing.  After everyone found enough items; sometimes making two or three trips to their vehicles, we played games.
It was delightful to see all the moms, children and grandmothers smiling and enjoying themselves...we have continued contact with several of the moms and are proud to announce they are doing well!  Thank you again to all our supports."

Update 12/02/05--We sent the last of our donations to Lara Ellis, New Orleans La Leche League--another 11 boxes.  The grand total came to 703 pounds!  Lara says that moms are beginning to return to the region and the items will be put to good use.  We were so impressed with the generosity of everyone in the project.  Thank you everyone who sent donations and all the wonderful La Leche League volunteers who helped get the items into moms hands.  Great job everyone!

Update 10/28/05--Thank you for all your generous donations.  We are readying our final shipments to Mississippi & Louisiana at this time.  We're just awaiting word that they are ready to receive them.  We'll post our final total as soon as we tally it.

If we somehow missed emailing you a coupon for your donation, please let us know.  I had some little hands helping sort the boxes, so something might have fallen through the cracks :).  If we missed you, I'm very sorry...please be in touch.

Update 9/30/05--We just received word that our La Leche League contacts in the gulf region are overwhelmed with donations at the moment.  They need some time to catch-up and distribute items, so I am removing their contact information for direct contributions for now.  I will let you know if this changes.

Thank you all for your continued generosity and thanks to all the dedicated La Leche League leaders who have worked so hard in the gulf region to help the moms who have been affected by Hurricane Katrina...you are the best!

Update 9/26/05--An email from Lori Criswell in Sugar Land TX:

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers.  We spent a very traumatic 9 hours in the car Thursday morning to only make it 53 miles.  My car started to fail (alternator I think).  So my family (we had 5 cars of us) decided to go to a nearby friends house and weather the storm there.  We could tell we would not be able to make it out of town.  The gas stations were already running out of gas.  There were 18 of us in one house and we were a lively bunch.  We felt safe since the storm started to move east.  I am back home now and we are starting to put our home back together.  I'm thankful that I have been taking in donations.  It looks like they are really going to be needed more than ever.  Thanks again for your prayers.  I believe they worked!!

Bob our dedicated UPS driver loads the first of your Hurricane
relief donations on 9/17/05--with a big smile.  What a great guy!
Thanks for all your generous donations, Moms!

Update 9/23/05--We are all watching the path of Hurricane Rita and hoping for the best.  Lori Criswell and our friends in the Sugar Land TX La Leche League group are evacuating ahead of the hurricane.  Please hold-up from sending anything to her for the time being.  Safe travels and safer returns to all in TX and LA.

Update 9/17/05--With the help of my darling husband, we sorted and packed our first wave of donations to send to the Sugar Land La Leche Group near Houston.  So far, we've received 30 individual donations.  Please bear with me as I send you all your $10 Mommy Gear coupons.  If you'd like to make an order before I get a coupon out to you, please use coupon code Donate05 at checkout.

First thing Monday we'll send 13 BIG boxes of maternity, nursing & baby wear.  Plus, there are a dozen baby slings/carriers that are very needed and some very useful diapering supplies, toys, and other creative items.  The grand total for this batch is 386 pounds!  And more arriving everyday.

I have to admit that it was quite an emotional experience to pack the boxes.  Many of you included lovely notes that brought a tear to my eye--and I'm not even pregnant right now ;).  Here's what some of you had to say:

Thank you so much for making it possible for me to help in some small way.  I hope these items will make some difference in the live of mothers, mother-to-be and their babies.  My heart goes out to them all.

Thank you so much for organizing this--I was wondering how to reach/help these moms.  I will be a life-long Mommy Gear customer!

Thanks to all the ladies (and gentlemen?) at Mommy Gear for taking the time and energy to organize the shipment of this equipment!  For many years I sold cloth diapers and nursing supplies.  Please accept this small donation of a few bras, diaper liners, diaper doublers, pants, a sling and some nursing pads.  These were the last of the stock I had, so there is no real fhyme or reason to it, but they're all brand new.  I'm happy to help in this small way.  I will put together a box of toddler clothes and send them when I can locate another box.  All the best to you!

Here is some clothing for the hurricane affected family~Please do not send me a coupon, I do not need anything (thank you , anyways :).  Thank you for helping by distributing the clothing.

Update 9/14/05--Wow!  We are so impressed by everyone's generosity and ingenuity.  We have received dozens of donations from our generous clients.  Everything that has been sent is in great shape and has lots of years of use left.   We are sorting and packing shipping boxes and expect our first wave of donations to head down to TX, LA & MS on Thursday & Friday. (turned out to be Monday :).

One clever mom asked her local consignment store to donate anything that doesn't sell in the next few weeks.  They said they had just cleared a lot of maternity wear for donation and were happy to send it on.  What a great idea!

Our Original Email (feel free to copy and send to your friends):
From time to time moms ask me if they can donate their gently used nursing clothes to other moms in need. I generally recommend giving them to a local moms' charity in your area.

Nursing Moms in Hurricane Katrina's Path
In the wake of the devastation that has been left by Hurricane Katrina, we would like to collect clothing for our fellow breastfeeding moms.

We will be working with the local La Leche League and WIC offices in the states affected to try to get your donations into moms hands as soon as possible.

In way of thanks, we will email a $10 Mommy Gear coupon to everyone who donates an item. The following gently used items are welcome in all sizes:
bulletNursing Tops, Dresses & Nightwear
bulletNursing Bras & Pads in Good Repair
bulletMaternity Clothing
bulletBaby Clothing
bulletDiapers & Baby Slings

Please send your items clean and in good repair to us at:

Mommy Gear
    110 Oakview Dr.
    Ligonier PA 15658

Include your name and email address, so that we can thank you with a $10 Mommy Gear coupon. We will take care of sorting and shipping the donations to the local areas.

Please do not send large items like car seats or cribs, as we just don't have the space to sort or ship these. Your local Red Cross office may have an idea of where you can donate these types of items in your area.

Tips for Shipping:
Generally speaking, packages that are 4 pounds or less are most economical to ship via U.S. Priority Mail.  If you have a medium-sized box, ask the Post Office if Priority Mail Flat Rate ($7.70) would be cheaper.  You might want to consider joining with a few girlfriends to ship are larger box together.  In this case, UPS or FedEx ground would probably be more economical.  If you ship together, please include each persons name and email, so we can thank each one of you with the $10 coupon.

Thank you for considering this request and for spreading the word about it. I realize that a gently used nursing top or baby sleeper is a small thing. But if it can help a nursing mom who has lost so much feel normal again and know that other moms care about her, hopefully it is not such a small thing after all.

Best Regards,
~Dawn
